Snow in DC may have saved the taxpayer big bucks…at least for now!
While many across America were experiencing frigid weather last week with record snow fall, Congress had a short week of sessions with the Senate trimming their “Jobs/Stimulus” bill from the $150B passed by the House to approx. $15B once it finally was unveiled on the Senate floor. You see, earlier on Thursday, the Senate Democratic leadership had signed off on an $85B package, with enough Senate GOP Senators supporting it that many believed it would pass the needed 60 votes to break any filibuster and thus ultimately pass the Senate. This bill had tax breaks for big business which was objected to by many liberal Dem. Senators.
So, following the weekly Democratic policy luncheon, the Senate Democratic Leader scaled back the package and introduced for Senate consideration a bill costing only $15B bill. The idea seems to be that when the senate takes its first vote on the bill on Monday, Feb. 22, that enough GOPers and Dems will support the smaller version that it might actually pass the Senate on the first try. What the House will do with this much smaller bill is yet to be seen. Could it be that the snow and too much togetherness brought the Senate Dems to their spending senses? Stay tuned and happy Valentine’s Day to all.
